Beer Name: Victory At Sea
Brewery: Ballast Point
Style: Imperial Porter
Average Score: 87/100
ABV: 10%

What it looks like:

Properly dark, maybe too much so for a Porter, but acceptable in the style. Camel foamy head with heavy lacing that sat. Deep crimson at the edge when shown against light, however completely void of light in the center.

Appearance Score: 10

What is smells like:

Perfectly appealing heavy toasted aroma with a slight chalky character. Though the label states vanilla, it does not come through in the nose more a syrup smell.

Aroma Score: 25

What is tastes like:

The coffee seem lost to me in this one. The alcohol shows up to play, up front and in your face to a novice but pretty reserved to considering the XXXX strength of this porter. The vanilla is there but not exactly welcome to my palette. I almost think that this brew would benefit without.

Taste Score: 40

Mouthfeel:

Syrup feel, coats but not unpleasant. Medium to Heavy bodied, like Star Jones prior to loosing all the weight,

Mouthfeel Score: 12

Overall:

All in all not bad, Not great, but not bad. Heavy and up front alcohol and a syrupy vanilla detract from the beer. Considering the 10% ABV it is worth a taste, so pick up a Bomber and be your own judge. I score this at Fishmans.

Score: 87
